GUIDES/COMPARE/CODEZERO VS DEVIN

CodeZero AI IDE vs Devin

Devin is an autonomous engineer you assign tasks to: Devin Cloud works in a cloud VM and hands back pull requests, and Devin Desktop and the Devin CLI also run a local agent on your machine. CodeZero works alongside you in VS Code, in your own checkout, with an agent that cannot change your code until you approve its plan or the change itself. They do different jobs.

THE SHORT VERSION
Where they overlap

An AI agent working on your code. Devin takes whole tasks and returns pull requests; CodeZero works with you, step by step, in your editor.

What CodeZero adds

The working day at the keyboard. A commit graph, inline blame and history, a code map next to the file you are editing that includes your uncommitted changes, and an agent that changes code only after you approve its plan or the change itself.

Where Devin is strong

Autonomy, DeepWiki and compliance. It tests in its own browser, works until a pull request is ready to merge, maps codebases with DeepWiki, and holds SOC 2 Type II. FedRAMP High covers Devin Desktop and CLI; Devin Cloud is in process.

01

Where the work happens

The whole comparison turns on one line: which side of the machine boundary the agent runs on, and what crosses it.

COGNITION CLOUD YOUR MACHINE task in: Slack · Teams · Jira · Linear · web cloud VM Ubuntu default its own browser records its tests DeepWiki — codebase map, auto-updated pull request worked until ready to merge context VS Code · CodeZero panel · Git · Tasks your agent CLI Claude·Codex·Copilot·Cursor plan gate opens on approval your working tree uncommitted changes included org index on Frigga’s backend or yours drives after approval PR comes back /handoff sends uncommitted diff quotas + dollar credits your own AI provider subscription
A boundary that crosses both ways. Devin Cloud takes a task from a chat or a tracker, works in a Cognition VM, tests in its own browser against a DeepWiki map, and hands back a pull request. Its CLI can also hand off your uncommitted work to a cloud session, and Devin Local and Outposts run on your machine or your infrastructure. CodeZero runs in your editor: the panel drives your local agent CLI (Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot CLI or Cursor CLI), and writes reach the working tree only after you approve a plan or the change itself.

Identity and shape

ParameterCodeZero AI IDEDevin
Vendor
Frigga Cloud Labs
Cognition
What it is
An AI IDE panel — Git client, agent host, org index and task system in one sidebar
An autonomous software engineer — cloud capacity you assign work to
Surfaces
VS Code
Web, Slack, Microsoft Teams, GitHub, Jira, Linear, an API, plus Devin Desktop and the Devin CLI, which also runs in JetBrains, Zed and Xcode via ACP
Where it executes
The developer’s machine
Cognition cloud VMs (Ubuntu default; Windows on a limited basis, macOS available) — or on your machine via Devin Local in Devin Desktop and the CLI, or your infrastructure via Outposts
Sees uncommitted work
Continuously — when the agent reads a file you have checked out, it reads your working copy, uncommitted changes included
Devin Desktop and the CLI work on your local files directly. Devin Cloud sees them when the CLI’s /handoff carries your work-in-progress diff to a cloud session, or through Local Hands (rolling out), with each local action approved

Interaction model
You work alongside it in your editor
You delegate and walk away — with Devin Cloud, tag it in a thread and read the PR later; Devin Desktop and the CLI also work interactively on your machine
Also needs
A supported agent CLI on the machine (Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot CLI or Cursor CLI), for agent turns only
Nothing — Devin supplies model access, with models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Cognition; Devin Desktop can also run your own ACP agent, such as Codex CLI or Claude
03

Autonomy and safety

Devin Cloud is built for autonomy; CodeZero is built for control.

ParameterCodeZero AI IDEDevin
Autonomy ceiling
Coffee mode finishes work already approved; nothing is committed, pushed or published while you are away
Works until the PR is ready to merge. Automations can start sessions from Slack messages, CI failures, Linear tickets and schedules
Browser and E2E testing
Runs your project’s own end-to-end suite, such as Playwright, as a terminal command or a plan’s declared verification; no browser of its own
Yes — tests in its own browser and records the interactions
Opens pull requests
Yes, through the GitHub CLI, with your approval each time — never an “allow always”, and never while you are away in Coffee mode
Yes — that is the deliverable
Spins up environments
No — it uses yours
Yes — cloud VMs, with Ubuntu the default
Write isolation
Structural. Before approval the agent can write only ~/.code0/plans, outside every repository, without asking; a change to a repository needs your approval, and in Planned mode it is refused until the plan is approved. The extension opens repo scope on approval, never a tool
Devin Cloud: the VM is not your machine. Devin Desktop and the CLI: optional OS-level sandboxing of the paths and network the agent can reach
Command scoping
An approved npm test grants exactly that, not npm test && rm -rf /
Devin CLI and Desktop: allow, deny and ask rules for commands, files and MCP tools. Devin Cloud: the VM bounds what a command can reach
Human in the loop
Every mode says where the plan goes; the agent cannot approve its own plan
Devin Cloud: a plan up front (waiting for approval only if you set it to), then review at the pull request. Devin CLI: writes and shell commands ask for approval in the default Normal mode
Reviewable before work starts
Yes — you approve a plan, or each change, first
Devin Cloud proposes a plan first and, by default, proceeds after 30 seconds unless set to wait for your approval. Devin CLI and Desktop have a plan mode
04

Code understanding

Both map codebases. DeepWiki lives in a browser; CodeZero’s map lives next to the file you are editing.

ParameterCodeZero AI IDEDevin
Codebase mapping
Functions and Graph, with file:line evidence on the links between them
DeepWiki — maps the codebase and keeps diagrams updated
Cross-repo
Core — the org index spans every indexed repository
Architecture mapping across what it is pointed at
Repos not cloned locally
Searchable, traceable and readable from the editor
Partly — DeepWiki is read-only and outside your working tree
Blended with local work
Yes — local versus cloud, so your uncommitted edits are in context
Devin Desktop and the CLI read your local files; Devin Cloud works from the cloned repository, plus any diff /handoff sends
History as context
Inline blame, file history, line history
Through git commands the agent runs
Available at the cursor
Yes — in the panel, next to the file
Devin Desktop: in the editor. Devin Cloud: in a browser, next to a task
Index location
Frigga’s hosted backend; self-hosted on Enterprise via code0.backendUrl
Cognition cloud
05

The cost model

Two different shapes of bill.

ParameterCodeZero AI IDEDevin
Pricing unit
Agent model usage is billed by the developer’s own AI provider subscription
Plan quotas plus on-demand dollar credits. ACUs (Agent Compute Units) now apply only to Enterprise
Concurrency limit
One session per tab, no cap published
Up to 10 concurrent sessions on Pro and Max; unlimited on Teams and Enterprise
06

Trust, compliance and operations

How each product handles identity, data and deployment.

ParameterCodeZero AI IDEDevin
Identity and access
A Frigga account; SSO and SCIM on Enterprise
RBAC, SAML SSO and SCIM — Enterprise tier
Self-hosting
Yes, on Enterprise — backendUrl, identityUrl and accountsUrl point the extension at your own deployment without a rebuild
Cognition-hosted single-tenant VPC (Customer Dedicated Deployment) and Outposts for customer-run execution — but inference stays in Cognition’s cloud
Code leaves the machine
The org index lives on Frigga’s backend, or yours. Files the agent reads go to the model provider you chose; CodeZero does not upload your working tree
Devin Cloud clones the repository into a Cognition VM; with Outposts, execution and repo access stay on customer machines. Devin Desktop and the CLI work on local files
Team-owned plans
Tasks and plans are organisation objects, so a colleague can open the plan you are blocked on
Jira and Linear are the work system
